The hardest thing about growing up in poverty isn't necessarily the shortage of food. It's not just the cramped kitchens or the tattered old T-shirts. The worst thing a child living in poverty experiences is the hopelessness. It's the lie that creeps into so many children's minds that they are nothing, that they don't matter, and that nothing will ever change. The heart of the problem of poverty isn't a financial one, it's a spiritual one.

That's why Compassion Canada develops children in all the different aspects of their lives—their bodies, minds, and relationships, while helping them discover God's love for them in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Critical to this mission is the Child Sponsorship Program, the longest running program within our ministry. Through this program, sponsors are connected with children living in desperate need, providing them with medical care, school assistance, and supplemental food when needed.

But it goes so much further than that. Children attend Compassion centres at a local church where they find encouragement, support and teaching that helps them grow up to be self-sustaining individuals. Most importantly, each child hears the life-giving message of the gospel and sees it lived out by the volunteers and staff members of the Compassion centre.

It's only by the gospel of Jesus Christ that poverty can end and lives be forever changed.

That's why Compassion partners with the local church in 26 of the poorest countries around the world. It's also why we partner with Christians around Canada to bring hope and help in Jesus' name. By partnering together, we are not only responding to the Bible's call to care for the poor, but also empowering the local church to bring Christ's message to the ends of the earth.

"As the leader of one of the largest charities in London, I am convinced that unity among God's servants is a key ingredient in kingdom-building," says Barry Slauenwhite, President and CEO of Compassion Canada. "The art of partnership is a key ministry philosophy of Compassion Canada and a valued component of our London Christian community."

Because we focus on the needs children face at every stage of life, our ministry goes beyond our Child Sponsorship Program. In the Child Survival Program, pregnant women and mothers of young babies receive the care they need at one of the most vulnerable stages of life. These children then transition into the Child Sponsorship Program. After graduation, young adults are given the opportunity to attend university and grow as Christian leaders through the Leadership Development Program.

By connecting Christians in Canada with the local church around the world—who are known for their outstanding love for the poor and needy&mdashy;we are reaching people that no other organization on earth can! Together, we are equipping the church with the resources they need to bring the eternal solution to poverty into the life of a child, and we get to see the church fulfill its role as the light of the world, pointing the way to salvation.
