Local Ministry Celebrates 40 Years

Trans World Radio (TWR) Canada celebrates forty years in ministry this month. With headquarters in London, Ontario, TWR Canada is perhaps the biggest global ministry you've never heard of.

TWR was founded in 1954 by Dr. Paul Freed who dreamed of Christian broadcasts spreading the hope of the gospel around the globe. He began with a 2,500 watt former army surplus transmitter in Tangiers, Morocco, and from there moved to Monte Carlo, Monaco repurposing a Nazi propaganda facility ensuring Christian broadcasts reached millions in Europe, the Middle East, and Russia.

TWR continued to grow, building transmitters which today cast a net nearly spanning the globe with more than 2,000 broadcasting outlets reaching 160 countries in 230 languages and dialects. TWR AM transmitters operate between 100,000 and 1million watts allowing them reach much further than North American radio stations.

TWR Canada began in 1973 under the direction of Rev. Arthur Murfin in London, Ontario. TWR Canada has been involved in funding several key infrastructure projects like the 100,000 watt AM transmitter in Benin broadcasting programs in fourteen languages to reach a potential audience of 190 million people. Benin is known as the birthplace of Voodoo and these gospel programs reach into some of the most inaccessible regions in Africa. TWR Canada recently partnered with The Gideons International in Canada and distributed bibles in West Africa, and portable radio devices loaded with hundreds of hours of gospel programming to Low-German speaking communities in Bolivia.

Ray Alary is President of TWR Canada. Alary has served with TWR for twenty-five years as a missionary first on Bonaire, and then in Africa, and was a key player in seeing the Benin transmitter approved and constructed. Despite the many advances in technology that has made this ministry easier, and reach further than ever before, Alary is adamant that one thing has not and will never change. "We will never compromise on the preaching and teaching of the Word of God."

When asked what's next for TWR Canada, Alary pointed to ministry partnerships. "Partnerships with individual donors, ministries with common goals, and overseas partners who carry out the actual ministry are vital. Only by working together can we ensure everyone has the opportunity to hear the gospel in a language they can understand. TWR Canada strives to use the most suitable form of media available to deliver the message including Internet, smart phones, audio players, and radio."
