The Pastor's Mother and the Usher (HUMOUR)

The CCNL (Christian Churches Network of London) was founded 17 years ago by two Christian Businessmen Bill Bethel and Don Hill along with Pastor Terry Sanderson. The rationale for forming the group was simple: to build relationships, leadership and bridges to strengthen the effectiveness of London and surrounding area churches and servant ministries.

Today there are approximately 230 churches and 110 servant ministries included on the group's contact list with 70 of the churches and 75 of the servant ministries registered as members of CCNL. The group is supported by stakeholders consisting of 30 business and professional people. Don Hill, a CCNL founder and current steering committee member said, "What I personally enjoy about what CCNL has accomplished is how it has brought so many church leaders of various religious faiths together to meet, plan and work together."

CCNL recognizes the fact that the bible , God's direct word to mankind only mentions one church; the church of Jesus Christ made up of all true believers.

CCNL strives to unite their Christian outreach to the community of the City of London through prayer, meeting community needs, leadership and evangelism. It is an opportunity to work together uniting individual outreaches doing the same thing so there are not unnecessary complications and duplications.

This is obeying Galatians 6:2 "Share each other's burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ."

This mission is also in accordance with Hebrews 10:24 which says, "Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works." Hill also said, "CCNL is based on the premise that humans are expressions of God gone wrong, and that the redemption of what Jesus paid for on the cross where he died brings those who truly respond and believe in their hearts back to right living relationship with Christ and eternal life is included."

The goal of life is eternal life not the rewards of this earth. CCNL is encouraging activities that will bring salvation to as many as possible. This is done through many one on one meetings and mentoring as well as through:
  • Christian Life in London - this monthly online publication bringing the Good News to a growing number of readers in 20 countries around the world.
  • Leadership Breakfasts that provide church and servant ministry personnel with opportunities for leadership development and relationship building.
  • Servant Ministry Meetings offering prayer support, accountability, opportunities for networking and growth through the sharing of resources and experience.
  • And community partnerships such as
    • The London Clean & Green /Greening Our City, a cooperative program with the City of London which originated in 1996 as a single day event aimed at gathering volunteers to clean up the garbage and graffiti in London's downtown core. Over the years the event grew to include more and more volunteers, to cover a larger area.
    • Participation and promotion of the London Curb-side Food Drives that, over the years has collected an outstanding 1 million pounds of non-perishable food for the London and Area Food Bank.
  • One of the most know of the CCNL initiatives is the annual London Prayer Breakfast. The breakfast sells out year after year as hundreds of Christians gather to engage in conversation, hear wonderful music, enjoy a bountiful breakfast and listen to dynamic Guest Speakers. The annual event takes months of organizing and so much attention given to every detail. Ann Clark, CCNL's administrator, takes the lead role from start to finish and the results are always outstanding.

This year, on May 29th at the Lamplighter Inn and Conference Centre in London the Guest Speaker will be Dr. Calvin Stiller. His presentation is entitled: "The Imperative of Tolerance in a Competitive Society"

Dr. Stiller, a pioneer of organ transplantation established the first Multi Organ transplant Service at University Hospital in London Ontario and has been described as the father of modern transplantation in Canada. He has similarly been a pioneer in the business of the translation of medical discovery in Canada establishing the largest investment fund in Life Sciences in Canada.

He is a co-founder of some of the most iconic institutions in Medical Research in Canada and has been recognized for his contributions by honors such as the awarding of the Order of Ontario, an Officer of the Order of Canada, a laureate of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame, a recipient of the Canada Wightman Gairdner Prize, and five honorary doctorates from Canadian universities among others.

He is Professor Emeritus of Western University and Chair of the Ontario Institute of Cancer Research of which he is a co-founder.

He is the son of a Prairie minister, one of five siblings, the father of six children and the husband of Angie, who he describes as "the exclamation mark in his life."

Hill further described the work of CCNL, "We want to be channels though which the lord Jesus Christ can flow out freely and accomplish what he chooses in peoples' lives and hearts in London and surrounding communities. Like the hymn we sing says; '10,000 reasons to praise and thank our God'."

People were created to be friends and lovers of God and until he - she realizes it they will go through turmoil and upset Galatians 3:11 Says; In this new life, it doesn't matter if you are a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized, slave, or free. Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all of us.

The value of CCNL to the churches, the servant ministries, the business community, the City of London and the people of this great city is priceless. As the needs change so does the services and support provided by CCNL.

Don Hill sums it up, "The desire of all of us at CCNL is to be as God, as in First Timothy 2:4-5, 'Who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. For there is only one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity-the man Christ Jesus'."
