To the uninitiated it would appear that the debate on whether abortion should be legal is over. Christian filmmakers in the United States who exposed illegal and immoral practices of Planned Parenthood have been harassed, sued, and threatened with arrest. Here in Canada our own Prime Minister has forbade Liberal ministers from voting their conscience, forcing them to stand in favour of abortion. While the media squarely lands on the side of the abortionists a recent event in London has showed that those seeking to protect unborn children have far from given up.

The London Area Right to Life Association held their 33rd Annual Gala and Silent Auction at the Hellenic Centre on May 5, 2016. The event featured great food, beautiful music, raucous fellowship, and powerful, even defiant, prayer.

The keynote speaker was Lia Mills, who at age twelve, recorded a speech she had written for a school project on abortion. Mills states that she had never been particularly pro-life but when she prayed about her topic she felt like God told her to do it on abortion. Despite strong resistance from the school system including disqualifying her from the competition she persisted and was eventually allowed to give it. Since she posted the video of the speech it has gone viral garnering over 2.7 million views.

One of Mills’ most striking statements, especially from the point of view of someone who is pro-life, was that she is pro-choice. By being pro-choice she is illustrating a fact that is often lost to those on both sides of the debate: Despite the fact that the abortion side is known as “pro-choice,” many women who get an abortion really don’t believe they have a choice at all. Pressure from family members, boyfriends, society, and even the abortion industry leave women coerced to “do the right thing.” It is often lost that there are at least two victims in each abortion.

While using military terms to describe spiritual battles is often seen as passé in the faith, referring to many of those in attendance as “warriors” in the Spirit of God is entirely appropriate. Looking around the Hellenic Centre there was no doubting the resolve of this pro-life organization to continue the fight until the end.

If you know of someone who is struggling with their pregnancy and their future, if you know someone who is struggling after having an abortion, or simply want more information you can go to right2life.ca or contact Bonnie at info@right2life.ca.
