“WHY” has come to London. Inspired by a sermon on the impact of the printed word on society by Pastor H. H. Barber in 1975 Dr. George Derksen launched the WHY Encounter book in 1986.

“WHY” is a neighbourhood evangelistic outreach in the form of a large “coffee table” style-book that is distributed door to door by volunteers. The book is beautifully produced and contains the stories of God’s impact in the lives of local Christians wherever it is distributed. The London specific book is currently being formatted and produced.

While the books are the most visible symbol of the outreach, the most important parts come before and after distribution. The WHY campaign is soaked in prayer for the local community, both by those in the community and in concerned churches across Canada. In fact, Christians in London have been praying and fasting for months already and the local books are planned to be distributed in September, 2017. This prayer is essential as although the books are beautifully produced it is only by the draw of Christ that they will have their desired impact.

Follow-up is quite important as well. Churches need to be an integral part of the campaign so that those who are impacted by the book have a place to go either with their questions or their new-found faith. While it is hoped that many churches would be on board the power of one plus the Holy Spirit cannot be denied. In a fiery sermon at a recent information night for WHY Pastor Collin Hauch of the Solid Rock Lutheran Church in Canmore, Alberta described how his church became the only one in the area to participate in the local WHY Encounter. After much faith, prayer, and fasting the church was blessed with the funds to distribute 7,000 books.

To this point over one million books have been distributed across Canada. Although the books are quite visually striking they are quite reasonably priced at $10 a piece. In London the community has been broken down into routes of fifty homes; sponsoring a route costs $500.

Sponsoring routes is not the only way to be involved in the campaign. People are needed to pray and fast, distribute books, follow-up, etc. If you are interested in helping there is a WHY Information Coffee being held on Monday, November 28 at the Lamplighter Inn. The Bible is out of the schools and many young people don't even know who Jesus Christ is. The WHY book is an excellent way to get the Gospel message into people's homes.  God's Word does not return void.   Join us in 2017 as we reach out to the city of London, ON and area. (Dr. George Derksen)
