Summary:

Are you ready to see your fixer upper?

These famous words are now synonymous with the dynamic husband-and-wife team Chip and Joanna Gaines, stars of HGTV’s Fixer Upper. As this question fills the airwaves with anticipation, their legions of fans continue to multiply and ask a different series of questions, like—Who are these people? What’s the secret to their success? And is Chip actually that funny in real life? By renovating homes in Waco, Texas, and changing lives in such a winsome and engaging way, Chip and Joanna have become more than just the stars of Fixer Upper, they have become America’s new best friends.

The Magnolia Story is the first book from Chip and Joanna, offering their fans a detailed look at their life together. From the very first renovation project they ever tackled together, to the project that nearly cost them everything; from the childhood memories that shaped them, to the twists and turns that led them to the life they share on the farm today.

They both attended Baylor University in Waco. However, their paths did not cross until Chip checked his car into the local Firestone tire shop where Joanna worked behind the counter. Even back then Chip was a serial entrepreneur who, among other things, ran a lawn care company, sold fireworks, and flipped houses. Soon they were married and living in their first fixer upper. Four children and countless renovations later, Joanna garners the attention of a television producer who notices her work on a blog one day.

In The Magnolia Story fans will finally get to join the Gaines behind the scenes and discover:
  • The time Chip ran to the grocery store and forgot to take their new, sleeping baby
  • Joanna’s agonizing decision to close her dream business to focus on raising their children
  • When Chip buys a houseboat, sight-unseen, and it turns out to be a leaky wreck
  • Joanna’s breakthrough moment of discovering the secret to creating a beautiful home
  • Harrowing stories of the financial ups and downs as an entrepreneurial couple
  • Memories and photos from Chip and Jo’s wedding
  • The significance of the word magnolia and why it permeates everything they do
  • The way the couple pays the popularity of Fixer Upper forward, sharing the success with others, and bolstering the city of Waco along the way

And yet there is still one lingering question for fans of the show: Is Chip really that funny? “Oh yeah,” says Joanna. “He was, and still is, my first fixer upper.” Reader Reviews (Courtesy Goodreads)

What can I say... I was a fan of the show the first moment I saw it on HGTV. It became instant must see TV. For me it was Chip. I had a bit of a Man Crush. I admit it. He is just a cool dude in a loose mood.

The book is probably more enjoyable because I am a fan of the show... and the both of them. It really is an inspired story. They did it with blood, sweat and tears. They have skin in the game.

If you like a solid pleasure read, a Memoir. This is a good easy one.

If you aren't a HUGE fan of these two when you start this book, you definitely will be by the time you finish. I laughed (a lot), I cried, i just plain enjoyed this. I had heard of Joanna Gaines, but to be honest, I'd only watched about 10 minutes of one episode of their show one day when my husband had it on. But I felt like I needed to find out more about them because everyone seemed to love them so much. I'll definitely be watching the show now and I've subscribed to their new magazine. They got a new fan in me. FYI, listen to the audiobook. They both narrate and it's hilarious how they go back and forth at each other.

Plot:
Before I start this review, I have to say that I love Fixer Upper. Chip and Joanna Gaines are one of my real life role models, and as soon as I heard this book was out, I picked it up as soon as I could. I loved how this book was told like an oral story (if that makes any sense), and not like a professional novel. Which made it all the more fun. Also, it was super cool seeing Chip and Joanna squabble throughout this book, like it was a casual story-telling conversation. And it was so cool to hear the adventurous story that led up to the Fixer Upper we know and love today.

Characters:
Obviously, this is a story about the authors: Chip and Joanna Gaines. So there are only two characters I can actually talk about. Chip was sooo funny. He was popping jokes here and there that made me actually laugh out loud (books rarely do that). As I said above, it was fascinating to see their whole life story piece together. I would never have expected their life story to be so adventurous.

Overall & Recommendations:
This was such a cute, quirky story, telling how Joanna and Chip's lives came together piece by piece. Anyone who watches Fixer Upper, this is a must read.

Memorable Quotes:
“Don’t quit, and don’t give up. The reward is just around the corner. And in times of doubt or times of joy, listen for that still, small voice. Know that God has been there from the beginning—and he will be there until . . . The End.”

“I realized that my determination to make things perfect meant I was chasing an empty obsession all day long. Nothing was ever going to be perfect the way I had envisioned it in the past. Did I want to keep spending my energy on that effort, or did I want to step out of that obsession and to enjoy my kids, maybe allowing myself to get messy right along with them in the process? I chose the latter - and that made all the difference.”

“It was such a blessing to find myself thriving in the middle of the pain. Unless you find a way to do that, there's always going to be this fake illusion that once you get there--wherever "there" is for you--you'll be happy. But that's just not life. If you can't find happiness in the ugliness, you're not going to find it in beauty, either.”

“I mean, that's life. Life is never predictable. Life is never really manageable. If your mind-set is always, "I'm just surviving", it seems to me that would wind up being the mind-set for the rest of your life. You'd just get stuck in it.”

Great read. I read this book when coworker of mine recommended it and passed it on to me. I'm glad I read it. Chip and Joanna have the sweetest love for one another and I love how they tell their story, talking back and forth to each other and to the reader like we are all sitting around one of their homemade farm tables. Their faith in God and trust in Him to guide them to greatness and pull them through the hard times is inspirational. Joanna shares a few of her revelations as a busy mom trying to attain perfection which I relate to and find really encouraging.

My favorite book I've read this year! I feel like I really got to know Chip and Joanna better. I loved their honesty and the fact they opened up and told their story. This isn't a teaser "tell all" article where they tell you nothing! You will actually come away learning more about their lives and loving them even more. It's also very inspiring and made me think more on what my dreams and goals in life are and how I can achieve them.

God's hands are ALL over this couple's incredible story of love, family, and wild success. In awe!

I ordered this book when it became available for pre-sale on Amazon. I had already visited Waco and had a great time seeing the Silo's and visiting the landmarks you see on their Fixer Upper show on HGTV. Even went to the Silobration 2016 this month and saw them in person.

Since I enjoy the show, enjoy her market, I figured I would thoroughly enjoy their book.

I absolutely did. When you get past the seemingly glass veneer of the show and see the couple that is behind that glass, you realize that they are exactly the people they present themselves to be; God loving, family loving, wholesome individuals with imperfections like the rest of the human race.

Written in first person, the reader can hear the voices of Jo and Chip Gaines. They bounced off of each other perfectly, just as they do on their show. Yet the difference one sees in the book is that they have opened up their lives to the raving public about who they truly are and what they believe in.

It's a wonderful book. Even those who don't know anything about the Gaines or who have no commonality with the Gaines, will enjoy.

Passing my copy down to a friend. She will pass it down again, and once I get it back, the book will be just like one of Joanna's worn, yet loved pieces of home decor.

Or rather, a well loved book returning back to me like an old, yet well worn, piece of shiplap!
