Isaiah 58: 6-7: “Is this not the fast which I choose,
To loosen the bonds of wickedness,
To undo the bands of the yoke,
And to let the oppressed go free
And break every yoke?
 Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry
And bring the homeless poor into the house;
When you see the naked, to cover him;
And not to hide yourself from your own flesh?”

Indwell, a Christian not for profit affordable housing provider in Hamilton, got its’ start in the early 1970’s as John and Siny Prinzen responded to the deinstitutionalization of Ontario’s psychiatric hospitals. First taking people into their own home they began to organize groups of professionals to respond to the housing crisis that developed as people were leaving what was, for some, the only home they had ever known. Click HERE read more on Indwell’s early years.

From those humble beginnings Indwell has grown to providing supportive housing to over 300 residences in Hamilton and Woodstock. These homes range from those with independent living with supports to others with 24 hour care. Indwells’ future includes moving into several other Ontario communities.

While strides have been made in providing homes for the homeless and under-housed in the 40+ years since they were launched the need for Indwell and organizations like them is as acute as ever. In conjunction with the government’s laudable goal of ending homelessness many housing support workers have been hired to help those suffering from chronic homelessness become housed, but their efforts are often stymied by a lack of safe, affordable, appropriate housing. It is a quiet crisis that requires intentional solutions.

In 2012, I had the good pleasure of attending the grand opening of Indwells’ Dr. John M. Perkins Centre in Hamilton. The Centre has 46 studio apartments as well as community meeting rooms and community development space on the first floor. It was built adapting the shell of a notorious nightclub and rooming house. When entering the Centre, you are immediately struck by the fact that while there is supportive care onsite the building is the antithesis of institutional. Natural light floods almost every part of the common areas, the building plan is open and airy, and you are never far from art work of various back grounds. The studio apartments are open concept, seeming much larger than their actual square footage. The design reflects the belief that the beauty and atmosphere of a dwelling has a significant effect on the tenant’s overall well-being.

Many of us feel a pang of compassion and sorrow when we see the injustice that many of our citizens face, but don’t know what we can do to help combat those injustices. As a Christian charity Indwell has many ways that people can be involved in providing housing for those in need.
