Panafric International Academy (PIA) began an elementary school in a rented facility September 2014 in Hawassa, Ethiopia and emrolled 65 Primary students.

The New Campus 3 which will accommodate all the children from three different campuses on one campus.
The school is Christian based; however, children from all ethnic, nationality, religious and economic backgrounds are enrolled. The mission and vision of the school is “To transform young lives through education—to make a difference in a nation!” The mission of the school is to create a safe and resourceful learning environment; therefore all staff is trained to deal with students lovingly, with patience and never to strike nor belittle a child under any circumstances. This is very unusual, because in Africa sticks are regularly used to disciple students. During the three-months we first visited and on my last three-month visit, I can attest to the fact that this policy was strictly reinforced.

In the winter of 2015 my husband and I volunteered for three months at the school. Enrolment at that time had increased to 89. September 2016 the school reached its capacity of 200 Nursery to Senior Kindergarten, therefore another campus was rented to meet the demands of the community. PIA’s reputation as a “School of Choice” for their child(ren) was becoming widely known throughout the community. Hawassa is heavily populated (107,534,882) and poverty is very evident, however, smiles, hugs and handshakes were the norm of the day.

Fast forward to 2018, a larger rental property was acquired. March 2018, I returned to Hawassa to assist the Director, Mesfin Atlaye in the amalgamation of three rental properties into one large rental property. My 3-month stay was over the Easter season and every Sunday and throughout the Holy Week all churches were filled to capacity. Often worshippers spilled out of the church proper. I was truly humbled to witness the reverence and the participation of the worshipers. The music sung by the beautiful voices of men, women and children words cannot adequately describe except to say, “The Best Is Yet To Come” and our Eternal Home Awaits Us.
