Shaila Visser, the National Director of Alpha Canada, had this to say to us, “Thanks to you and the many others who support Alpha and their local church, thousands of lives were transformed by the Gospel, Christians all over Canada were empowered and equipped to share their faith, and church communities across the country were revitalized.

“We're so grateful for you and can't wait to share more stories of God's goodness this year as we, together, continue to serve the church in Canada.”

The 2018 Alpha Youth Series has been reimagined for today's youth culture. Since the launch of the Alpha Youth Film Series in 2013, it has been used to run Alpha for 13-18 year olds in 49 countries, in 19 languages — giving young people all around the world the chance to explore faith through Alpha. Filmed in Vancouver, London, Paris, Rome, Israel and many other incredible locations.

In 2018...

Over 100,000 people in Canada explored and discovered life, faith and Jesus on Alpha.

Over 40,000 people across the country volunteered at an Alpha in their local church communities.

Over 5,000 Alphas were run from coast to coast, including approximately 2,500 run for youth.

Alpha Canada also achieved their Christmas Gift Campaign goal of $100,000 through your generosity, which will support the ongoing work of Alpha in Canada.

The new Alpha Youth Series included 13 episodes, each around 20-25 minutes long, and generally ran for 9-10 weeks. Similar to the first series, each episode included discussion breaks for conversation, and personal testimonies related to the theme of every episode.

Each episode featured a different question about life and faith. Here’s the run-down:

  • Episode 1 – Life: Is This It?
  • Episode 2 – Jesus: Who is He?
  • Episode 3 – Cross: Why Did Jesus Die?
  • Episode 4 – Faith: How Can I Have Faith?
  • Episode 5 – Prayer: Why and How Do I Pray?
  • Episode 6 – Bible: Why and How Do I Read the Bible?
  • Episode 7 – Spirit: Who is the Holy Spirit and What Does He Do?
  • Episode 8 – Fill: How Can I Be Filled With the Holy Spirit?
  • Episode 9 – New Life: How Can I Make The Most Of The Rest Of My Life?
  • Episode 10 – Evil: How Can I Resist Evil?
  • Episode 11 – Telling Others: Why and How Should I Tell Others?
  • Episode 12 – Healing: Does God Heal Today?
  • Episode 13 – Church: What About The Church?

The Hosts of the new Alpha Youth Series included Jason Ballard. Jason was also the Executive Producer for the series and led the Alpha Youth Series team. He is also a pastor at his home church, Christian Life Assembly. He lives in Langley, British Columbia with his wife Rachael and his three kids.

Ben Woodman came back as one of the hosts in the new series! Ben is the International Youth Coordinator at Alpha. He and his wife, Melissa, live in Vancouver, British Columbia where he worked as a youth pastor for 10 years before joining the team at Alpha.

In the new series Jason and Ben were joined by new co-hosts: Jassie, Landry & Peter!

Jassie organized Alpha at her school and now helps other students run it in their schools. Landry is the Pastor of Youth and Young Adults at Cariboo Road Christian Fellowship in Burnaby, BC. Peter is a full time Youth Pastor at Christian Life Assembly, in beautiful Langley, BC.

Just because 2018 is behind us, it is never too late to organize an Alpha program at your church.

How do I run Alpha?

Step 1 Get Trained

Alpha comes with 15 short Leader Training videos as part of our ‘Training Centre’ as well as other resources that answer the most common questions about food, atmosphere, prayer and the essentials of a great Alpha. These are specifically for the primary Alpha leader to watch and are accessible before and after you create an Alpha Builder account.
Step 2 Plan and Prepare

In Alpha Builder we have a planning schedule, checklists and training videos to help you get started. The Alpha talks are available for free in Alpha Builder so your costs will depend on what scale you want to provide food, decor, promotional pieces, etc. You’ll need to decide a few things: Where will you run your Alpha? What time will work best for those you want to invite? What dates will work best for you and the venue? It’s a great idea to get some of your key people to help you think this through.
Step 3 Build and Train Your Team

One of the vital parts of running Alpha is having a great team. Whatever the size of your Alpha, make sure you pick the best possible people to help and support you. After you’ve gathered a team, plan one or two team building days to watch the 3 Team Training videos together, get to know each other and pray for your upcoming Alpha.
Step 4 Spread the Word

Once you’ve got everything planned and you’ve picked your team, you’ll need to figure out how to promote your Alpha. Pray for creativity, and think through how to encourage people to invite their friends and promote your Alpha to the local community. We have a variety of free resources in Alpha Builder including social media images, promo videos, and customizable print materials to help you with this.
Step 5 Go for it

Finally, the best way to learn more about running Alpha is to go for it. Running Alpha takes a bit of work but it’s totally worth it. As you get ready to launch your Alpha, pray as a team for each guest and for each other. We’re so glad you’re part of the global story of Alpha, transforming lives in your local context and we can’t wait to hear how it goes.
