Christian Blind Mission Canada Announces New Organizational Name

As of April 2019, Christian Blind Mission (cbm) Canada will be re-named Hope and Healing International (formerly cbm, forever Christian). Why? Because as Hope and Healing continues to provide healing care to forgotten children who can’t walk, who can’t see, who can’t hear – who struggle to survive deep poverty with the added challenge of disability – it became apparent that the name Christian Blind Mission only reflected a fraction of their work. Hope and Healing speaks to the healthy hearts, bodies and communities their supporters make possible for children and families living with disability in the poorest countries of the world.

“I tell people at churches or on airplanes about Sadik – a boy we met in a rural village on the verge of death because of his cleft lip and palate. He could have died but our team found him and he was given life-saving surgery. Amazing, right? But instead of awe, people look at me curiously and ask ‘but aren’t you Christian Blind Mission?’ It happens all the time and I get it. The confusion makes sense,” said Ed Epp, Executive Director, Hope and Healing. “The staff and board of Christian Blind Mission (cbm) agreed it was time to clear away the confusion that this is a mission that only serves people who are blind. We are excited to head into the future under this new name with clarity and energy – acknowledging God’s faithfulness in the past and trusting it into the future.”

The new name also calls the organization back to its roots. When Ernst Christoffel started a home for children in Turkey in 1908, he didn’t turn any child away. Right from the beginning, he opened his doors to care for the children no one else was caring for – not even the church – calling them “nobody’s children.” These children living in the poorest communities are the world’s most vulnerable people and Hope and Healing believes God has called them to bring hope into hearts who have lost hope and healing to these children in pain. This is the work the organization has done for decades and the work they believe God is calling them to continue.

“Our work is inspired by Jesus’ life and we continue to value each child as Jesus would – this is our deepest reason for being and what guides our decisions and the way we work,” said Epp. “It’s our hope that our new tagline, ‘formerly cbm, forever Christian,’ links us to our history but also declares our ongoing commitment to sharing Jesus’ love with the world.”
