Justin: Belonging His Way

Justin has had a year of ups and downs; a year of exciting change and a year of new challenges.

Justin: Belonging His Way Last August, Justin and his two roommates, who are all supported by Christian Horizons, moved into their new home. Justin enthusiastically participated in layout of the home and the decorations for his room. His excitement upon moving in was hard to contain.

Justin: Belonging His Way Justin’s home was built in a partnership with Christian Horizons and Habitat for Humanity Heartland Ontario. Christian Horizons missions is, as an expression of Christian faith, to work together with people who experience disabilities to accomplish their goals and nurture communities where everybody belongs. As one of almost 2,000 people who receive services from Christian Horizons, Justin wants to belong to his community. His new home on Forbes St. provides him with opportunities to get to know his neighbours and interact with the Habitat for Humanity crew who are continuing to build houses on the street.

He likes going out to see the crew from Habitat where everyone knows him by name. The Habitat crew members ask Justin to share a joke since he loves to hear other people laugh. Justin has also been very enthusiastic about helping to host a neighbourhood barbeque, so he can get to know his new neighbours better.

Shortly after the excitement of the move, Justin encountered a challenge – he lost most of his vision. He now has to look at life differently, as well as rely more on the supports he receives from Christian Horizons.

Founded in 1965 as a non-profit, faith-based charitable organization, Christian Horizons serves people who experience disabilities in Canada, and in developing countries around the world through Christian Horizons Global. Over 3,500 employees support people with developmental disabilities and their families through residential and ancillary programs such as participation supports, employment supports, and family camps. Christian Horizons has more than 200 residences as well as respite care and independent living locations in Ontario and Saskatchewan. Since 1990, Christian Horizons Global has worked in partnership with local organizations to promote the inclusion and rights of people living in exceptional circumstances in six developing countries around the world.

Christian Horizons vision is that people who experience disabilities belong to communities in which their God-given gifts are valued and respected. Even with his additional challenges, Justin is engaged in his community – stating what he wants to do and where wants to go. Christian Horizons’ employees come along side him to promote belonging on his behalf. Justin enjoys attending North Park Community Church on Saturdays for the praise and worship service when he is able. He has expressed a desire to attend a pottery class, and to listen to a Karaoke session through Hutton House. And this fall, Justin has started attending a friendship group through Bethel CRC.

Justin is exploring and using his gifts – learning pottery, organizing a barbeque, telling jokes – and getting to know people in his community. He appreciates those who support him at Christian Horizons and is thankful for the care and respect he receives daily. Even though it may appear that his life has been limited in one way, it is expanding in others.
