By Alex Cameron

Several years ago, I visited a new church and then became a regular attender.

From the opening welcome through the benediction scripture poured out of the pastor. I was smitten. I was really struck by how grounded he and his teaching was in the word of God. During that initial meeting he reminded us of his Pastor's challenge - to memorize 12 scripture verses in 12 weeks.

I took the challenge seriously and started to memorize some Bible verses. Initially some verses that I knew or that were loosely shaped in the back of my mind. Later I added verses that were meaningful to me. Some from my personal reading some from a message he was teaching. I typed each up on an individual sheet of paper and studied them every day, often in bed at night before I went to sleep.

After several weeks, one morning I woke up quoting scripture. My reaction was Wow that was cool. That simple challenge changed my life. It changed how I read and study scripture. It changed how I pray.

I continue to review verses I have memorized daily and frequently wake up with scripture on my mind and lips, especially if I was praying, studying or reciting scripture when I was going to sleep.

As I continued to memorize scripture I compiled and self-published a book of some of the verses that were important to me called Bible Verses for Prayer, Meditation and Memory. If you are interested , click HERE, it is available as a free download.

I also use an app on my Smartphone from In that app I have created a group that includes some of my favourite verses. Feel free to check it out if you are looking for some ideas.
