Christian Life in London’s Kristine Abramoff Tours Creation Bookstore and chats with store owner Kevin Bodaly.
A bookstore with much more than just books!

London’s Creation Bookstore began in 1983, and in 1996 was bought by Kevin Bodaly and his wife, Cathy. In 2001, they moved to their present location at 900 Oxford Street East. Retail in general is tough, but when the whole world changed for everyone in March, things became more difficult. Creation Bookstore’s physical location was closed to the public starting March 24th, but this did not stop Creation Bookstore from continuing to meet the needs of those looking for Christian movies, books, music, and more during the COVID lockdown.

Online sales tripled during the time the physical store had to close, and the Bodalys came in to work every day during the closure filling orders and answering the phone and any questions customers had about products. Since the store was not set up for online sales, a lot of extra work went into putting together orders, sourcing products, and keeping up to date on the latest legislation. However, during lockdown, Creation Bookstore was a real outlet for those who were holed up in their homes without contact and needed uplifting Christian materials or just wanted to chat over the phone about what products were available.

Being surrounded by positive Christian influences and media is important even at the best of times, so it is not surprising that Kevin and his wife have been regularly hearing about the positive impact the books and movies they sell have on those in the community. During COVID, Max Lucado’s Anxious For Nothing has been a huge hit, as customers have been seeking healthy ways to deal with the new anxiety COVID brings. Other Christian living books that deal with managing anxiety have also become very popular.

Bible sales have also increased since March, and Kevin is happy to know that the bookstore is helping provide resources that support those who are struggling throughout the COVID pandemic.

Now that the physical location is open again, customers are once again coming in. Kevin says that some customers even just come in to browse the shelves and take a few minutes to relax and find a change of pace. The atmosphere of the bookstore is very positive, and there’s always good music playing. Customers can feel that the staff are dealing with stress in a different way, and can sense the peace that emanates from the store.

Creation Bookstore carries a wide selection of books and movies for the long winter nights that are approaching alongside the expectation of continued physical distancing. For those having family movie nights this fall, Kevin maintains a selection of wholesome and uplifting family movies that he’s watched and would recommend. Movies by the Kendrick brothers such as Overcomer and War Room have good messages and are always a hit with families. Pilgrim’s Progress, based on John Bunyan’s book, has both an excellent story and animation. Front of the class is an inspiring story of overcoming disability to follow one’s dreams.

Other great picks are I Can Only Imagine, The Masked Saint, The Grace Card, Question of Faith, and Champion. Jeremy Camp’s story, I Still Believe, was in theatres during the lockdown in March, but has been released on DVD and is available at Creation Bookstore. This fall, Creation Bookstore will be having three different sales: the Spirit Sale, and two regular fall flyers. These will start mid-September and finish at the end of October. While usually sales are only two weeks, this year these sales are running for six weeks to help everyone get access to products. Another thing to look forward to are book signings, which will be scheduled when the time is right.
